James Stoddard-- Best Literature Picks of 2007
This was my year of reading mostly older works. I reread Hyperboria by Clark Ashton Smith and The Last Battle by C.S. Lewis. I found Rowling's Half-Blood Prince to be the best of the series so far. Planet of Exile by LeGuin is a good read, if only for her wonderful prose. Beyond Life by James Branch Cabell is a good book about writing. My favorite was probably David Lindsay's Sphinx. Lindsay, the author of A Voyage to Arcturus, is a writer whose other works I've meant to read for years. The story itself wasn't totally riveting, but I enjoyed the insights into Victorian society.
I've recently discovered Librivox, which uses volunteers to read public domain audio books. Some of the readers are good, others aren't, but the downloads are free.
