A Celtic Christmas Runs December 1-11 at Lucid Stage, Portland, Maine (Press Release)

Fiddlers, Irish step dancers and a juggler will be contributing to the merriment as AIRE (American Irish Repertory Ensemble, Maine’s Irish Theater Company) brings back its popular holiday family entertainment, A Celtic Christmas, with some exciting changes—AIRE is introducing a new piece, The Legend of the Wren, an original Irish Christmas tale featuring live music and dancers from the Stillson School of Irish Dance.  The show runs December 1-11 at Lucid Stage in Portland.

A Celtic Christmas offers an unusual and fun-filled experience for audience members of all ages.  New cast members will be joining Susan and Tony Reilly in a lively performance of A Child’s Christmas in Wales, the classic poem by Dylan Thomas recollecting boyhood holiday memories.  This year, it is paired with a new segment, The Legend of the Wren, based on the Irish tradition of the Wren Boys, who go from house to house on St. Stephen’s Day (December 26) singing songs and collecting donations.  AIRE’s exuberant presentation invites the audience to join in the fun.
Taking part in this year’s celebration are juggler Matiss Duhon; fiddlers RoryAlice Hoecker and Jaime Eller (who performs with the traditional Irish music group Boghat); and step dancers from the Stillson School of Irish Dance in Portland.  Cast members include Owen Doane, Corey Gagne, Sarah Glidden, Ansel Hoecker, Evan Laukli, Grier Miskell, Susan Reilly, Tony Reilly and Cheryl Reynolds.
AIRE Artistic Director Tony Reilly, who is directing the show, noted, “We’re delighted to be collaborating with the Stillson School of Irish Dance this year so that we can include step dancing, which is such a quintessential element of Irish culture.  This show is a joyous way for audience members to get into the Christmas spirit with a unique cultural experience.”
A Celtic Christmas runs December 1-11 at Lucid Stage, 29 Baxter Boulevard in Portland.  Performances are evenings at 7:30 (except Sunday and Monday), and Saturday and Sunday at 2:00. Ticket prices range from $12 to $22.
